Students and young volunteers from Norton College, Lady Lumley’s, Pickering, Market Weighton and Malton Schools are undertaking a shared piece of work from June until November. This will be a detailed study and profile of the soldiers of the 5th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment during the Great War. This was one of the main local infantry Battalions, a pre-war Territorial unit whose ranks were filled with many Scarborough & Ryedale lads.
They will focus on building a battalion database, a digital story of 3 local soldiers, a short film and booklet. Material will also be used as part of a new exhibition at Beck Isle Museum in 2011.
Students are also sharing some of their work with WWI Yorkshires.org a web based project about the Yorkshire Regiment in the Great War
Dan Jefferson, from Malton School who helped to launch the research of ‘Journey to the Front’.
